configurable smoke paintings,
18 aperiodic tiles of an open-ended series, 80’ x 105” , oil paint and resin on wooden magnetic panels, 2013
Fragments of paintings, inspired by Penrose tiling, mounted on a magnetic wall. The only rule in Penrose tiling is that no two shapes can create a parallelogram. From that rule, one can generate uncountably many aperiodic configurations.
The “tiles” are built up from layers of paint and resin that were either applied with cut brushes, or blown with forced air across the surface. The installation changes every day: The tiles are attached to a magnetic wall, each piece matched to another, and configured according to prior guidance. The result is an open-ended, ever-changing installation in which the viewer literally completes the work by changing its very composition.
